The story behind "THE" photo

After hearing on television that a small plane hit the World Trade Center I ran down to the Jersey City waterfront to photograph what I thought was going to be a photo of the smoke billowing from the twin towers. A few minutes later I ended up documenting history as the second plane flew into my frame.

Today, ten years later I can still vividly remember my three distinct thoughts as the plane roared over my head.
- wow that plane is HUGE...
- my god it is going so fast...and
- how did they get somebody here so fast to put out the fire?

Believe it or not I actually thought it was a fire fighting plane, the kind you see on TV. As it flew in, I quickly shot frame after frame, composing my shot and waiting for the moment the bottom of the plane would open up and the chemicals would pour out onto the fire. In those split seconds I truly believed that was what was going to happen.

In 2001 I had still not made the switch from film to digital. The photo of the second plane approaching the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 was shot on 400 ASA negative FILM - the reason why the images appear grainy. It was simply the camera body I grabbed without thinking that morning when I rushed out. It had a roll of film still loaded in it, left over from an event shoot I had just done a few nights before - simply just not the right type of film to be shooting on a sunny day -

A few hours later my color negative FILM was developed in the STAR LEDGER's (NJ's largest newspaper) darkroom. My photo of the plane approaching the World Trade Center appeared on its pages the next day and was then published in US News & World Report as an exclusive 3 page pull out. After it, and a few other photos I shot, were run by Reuters I began to receive calls from around the world with requests to publish my photos in books and magazines some of which included:

Der Spiegel, Max and Geo , Germany
The Guardian and London Times, England
Paris Match, France
Geo Russia
Profil, Austria
Herald Sun, Australia
Sette, Italy
NRC Handelsblad, Holland
The Encyclopedia Brittanica USA
Life, USA
